November 11, 2015 Taylor at Kokomo
Kokomo’s girls basketball team outrebounded Taylor to the tune of 52-24 at Memorial Gym Wednesday night. Add in the Lady Kats’ defensive effort on one of the area’s top offensive threats, and the winning recipe was too much for the Titans. Kokomo jumped out to a 10-point lead early in the second quarter and led by double digits for all but a few ticks the rest of the way, downing Taylor 57-42 in improving to 2-1 on the season. Lady Kat Sarah Tickfer kept Taylor’s main offensive weapon Brie Boehler in check most of the night. Boehler scored four points in the first quarter before Kokomo clamped down and kept her from getting off a shot in the second period as the Kats built a 30-18 halftime advantage.Allie Lowe and Olivia Wilson matched Taylor’s rebounding total between the two of them, with Lowe pulling down a game-high 14 boards to go with nine points, while Wilson finished with 10 rebounds. “Rebounding has been a strength of ours,” Dexter said. “We knew we could get an edge.” That edge was apparent early on, as Kokomo outrebounded the Titans 15-6 in the first quarter alone.Taylor (1-2) kept it close for most of the first eight minutes, tying the game at 9-all on a Boehler free throw with 1:30 to play in the first period. That’s when the Kats started to pull away, as Quaynika Merriweather scored seven straight points and Tickfer nailed a buzzer-beating trey to put Kokomo up 19-11 heading into the second quarter. Merriweather, who didn’t start the game, finished with a team-high 16 points for the Kats. Sieara Langley, Jayda Andrews and Kaila Stiner each notched six points for the Kats. Cami Hansen had a great night for the Titans, finishing with a game-high 17 points. “Cami looked for her shot [Wednesday], she was a lot more under control,” Bentzler said. “I thought our kids played much tougher in the second half. I thought Savannah Delgado and Cami played much better. We had it down to 10 with two minutes to go. We just didn’t make plays.”Kokomo hit on only 6  of 21 from 3 point land. For the game they hit on 63 from the field and converted on 11 of 14 from the free throw lane. Kokomo hqd 52 rebounds 16 turnovers and 23 eouls called on them.

Harrison (0-4, 0-1 NCC) had been averaging 42.7 points per game in the previous three games. “We turned defense into offense in the third quarter,” Kokomo coach Jeremy Dexter said. “We got into foul trouble early in the game, but we played through the adversity. It was a good sign and now we are moving forward. In the first quarter, we were kind of getting settled in on playing on the road. I saw a lot of good things in the second quarter.”What Dexter saw was Kokomo going from an 11-6 lead at the end of the first quarter to a 32-11 lead at halftime.
